IUDs officially recommended for healthy women, teens

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is now officially recommending the use of IUDs for healthy women and teenagers.

This endorsement is a big change.

Intrauterine devices to prevent pregnancy caused concerns because they could raise the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease.

But many experts say that risk is small and the new recommendations replace guidelines issued in 2005. They also say encouraging the use of long-acting reversible contraceptive methods for some women may help lower unintended pregnancy rates.
