An educational center that helps young men on Chicago's South Side celebrated a new expansion Friday.

Community leaders gathered at the Young Men's Educational Network, also known as YMEN.

They cut the ribbon for a new $150,000 mentoring sports court. The college will use it for basketball, tennis.. volleyball, and ice skating in the winter.

YMEN's mission is to prepare young men in the Lawndale neighborhood for leadership by helping youth serve the community in a safe environment.

"We have not lost a single child as a result of violence in 15 years, so safe places are important to YMEN," said founder and executive director Mike Trout.

YMEN also celebrated a new 8,000 square foot urban garden that now sits on a former lot where vehicles were abandoned.
