Drug suspect shot, officers injured in suburbs

June 30, 2011 (COUNTRY CLUB HILLS, Ill.)

Cook County Sheriff's Police say several officers were at a shopping complex around 1:30 p.m. conducting an investigation. That complex is now a crime scene.

"The offenders who we were targeting attempted to flee. In the course of apprehending those offenders, shots were fired. One offender was shot. He taken to Christ Community Hospital in Oak Lawn," said Liane Jackson, Cook County Sheriff's spokeswoman.

The 37-year-old is in critical condition.

Witnesses say the suspects were in a silver Cadillac speeding throughout the complex. The car is registered to a woman in Blue Island.

Witnesses say someone shot and flattened the tires on the suspects' vehicle. Along with the suspect who was shot, Cook County authorities say three other suspects were arrested.

"He was driving, trying to control the car because the tires had been shot out. He was trying to control it, trying to get away. Obviously he didn't," said Aaron Warr, witness.

"The cops rammed him a few times trying to get them to stop, and then when they got closer towards the intersection, I guess the police just had enough and decided to swarm around him and shoot the car," said King George, witness.

A police spokesman says the suspect's car clipped an undercover car, flipping it over in the parking lot. Authorities on the scene would not say if the injured officers were inside the car, a Chevy Traverse which has a California license plate. That vehicle was registered to a rental car agency.

"Four of our officers were also injured during this operation and they have non-life-threatening injuries. They were also taken to the hospital," said Jackson.

The mayor of Country Club Hills and witnesses say the officers were involved in the rollover accident.
