Kids shot in weekend gun violence

July 10, 2011 (CHICAGO)

One of the victims is an 8-year-old boy, who is in fair condition Sunday night after he was shot while playing outside his house. It happened at about 9 p.m. Saturday on South Wood in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.

Treyvon Robinson was shot in the abdomen, and the bullet grazed his colon. Doctors at University of Chicago Children's Hospital were able to remove the slug.

Police told relatives the shooters were on foot and that the shots came from the end of the block. The boy's grandfather Hershel Robinson was on the porch when it happened.

"He was standing on the sidewalk playing with his two little partners. Shots rang out. I thought it was firecrackers but he said he was hit and he fell, and I jumped off the porch and I came down here and picked him up," Robinson said.

On the city's West Side, a 12-year-old girl was shot in her legs and buttocks in the 4100-block of Maypole Avenue.

She was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition. No other information was available.

No one was in custody in either shooting Sunday evening.
