State officials provide mortgage help in Chicago

July 16, 2011 (CHICAGO)

They spoke to residents today at a mortgage relief outreach project on the southwest side.

Representatives of banks and other lenders were on hand to answer questions, and try to help homeowners avoid foreclosure.

One new protection gives struggling homeowners as many as 90 extra days to rework or refinance their mortgages.

"Homeowners who take advantage of the new law enacted last year and use the extra time to literally get their financial house in order... the better off we are as a community," said State Sen. Tony Munoz (D-Chicago).

"We know it's important to have a home for your family, and we're going to keep continuing to fight to make sure you keep that home," said State Rep. Daa Carli (D-Chicago).

Homeowners were cautioned to make sure they do not become victims of mortgage rescue scams.
