ComEd restores all power as heat wave rolls in

July 17, 2011 (CHICAGO)

A storm knocked out electricity to more than 850,000 customers last Monday. ComEd brought in work crews from across the country to help restore the outage. It took days to restore power for everyone. On Saturday night, 500 people still did not have power.

ComEd got the electricity going just before extreme heat hit the area. Chicago's North Avenue Beach was packed with people trying to stay cool Sunday afternoon.

There were many outdoor events this weekend, including the third annual Lincoln Park Arts and Music Festival. Folks stayed cool with light weight clothing and plenty of water.

From the city to the suburbs, cooling centers will be open this week to help residents without air conditioning cope with extreme heat.

The easiest way to find one near you is by calling your local police department, or if you live in the City of Chicago, calls 311. You are also urged to keep a close check on elderly residents in your neighborhood.
