Cranberries may help fight urinary tract infections

You may have heard that cranberry produces are useful against urinary tract infections or UTIs in women. Now a new study puts the berries to the test.

A study in the Archives of Internal Medicine compared women on a low-dose antibiotic to those on the cranberry treatment. The antibiotic users had a little less than two UTI recurrences compared to four recurrences for the cranberry group.

But the antibiotics also increased the rate of antibiotic resistance.

So, the study concludes cranberries may be a useful alternative to long-term antibiotics even though they are less effective.
