Durbin, Kirk question airline fare increases

The two U.S. Senators from Illinois are questioning the nation's airlines Saturday after congress failed to take action on a new budget for the Federal Aviation Administration.

The partial shutdown of the FAA eliminated the airlines' authority to collect ticket taxes. However, most carriers aren't passing the savings along to customers. Nearly all raised fares equal to the taxes.

So now Illinois Sens. Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk have sent a letter to the head of the Air Transport Association asking why. Other senators are also putting pressure on the airlines.
