Man missing in Lemont pond

Dive crews near suburban Lemont spent several hours Tuesday looking for a man who went missing in a retention pond Monday night.

Officials say Jeremy Asbell, 25, of Bolingbrook, was out with a friend in a canoe when it flipped. The other man swam to safety, but Asbell didn't surface.

Asbell's girlfriend, Jessica Gortz, said the father of two called her Monday night before he disappeared to say he was at a bonfire party. Gortz said, "We are hoping that he got out of the lake and is passed out or is unconscious or something,"

Authorities said the search is difficult because the pond is filled with weeds. The search has been called off for Tuesday, but dive teams will return to the pond Wednesday morning.
