Teen shot on South Side basketball court

August 3, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Darius Brown was reportedly on a basketball court at Metcalfe Park on 43rd and State when someone drove by and opened fire.

Brown is at Comer Children's Hospital in Hyde Park.

"I think he's going make it 'cause he's strong and he has family to support him," said Paris Morrison, sister.

"A young man, 13 years old, was playing basketball here in Metcalfe Park. Rounds were fired from that vehicle. We don't have much information on that vehicle," said Commander Fred Walker, Chicago Police Department.

Witnesses called it a drive-by shooting.

"The kid yelled out, 'he got shot,' and everyone surrounded him," said Ted Cook, witness.

The shooting has already enraged those who know Brown who are calling for more police. They want the suspects caught.

"This has to stop. We need more protection with police officers just like they are protecting the 'L' stop, protect the basketball courts. Protect where our kids have to go out and play," said Valeria Hanks, neighbor.

"I think they were cowards. It don't take a tough person to come up there and shoot a park full of kids. Here is a kid who could have been the next Michael Jordan," said Geno Williams, witness.

Family and friends are hopeful the soon to be 8th grader will play ball again for Holy Angels Catholic School and two other leagues.
