A long-serving and highly decorated fighter pilot returned to the U.S. and got welcome home in the Chicago area over the weekend.

Colonel Guy De Boo got a surprise welcome home in the western suburbs.

The 48 year-old pilot was born in Belgium but has 27 years of service in the U.S. military. During his career, he has flown combat missions in F16 jets over Kosovo, Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan.

That experience gives him a unique perspective on the weekend's tragedy in Afghanistan that killed U.S. Navy SEALS.

"Those were the elite of the elite. They are in my prayers. I know what the families are going through. I had to do that for some of my own that passed away. It is never easy," the colonel told ABC7 Chicago.
