Happy workplace could extend life

August 11, 2011

Israeli researchers studied more than 800 adults who worked more than eight hours a day for about 20 years. Employees who reported low social support at work were more than twice as likely to die over the course of those two decades, compared with those who said they had a good social support system in the workplace.

Peer support was a stronger predictor of health and longevity than relationships with a supervisor or boss.

The findings are published in Healthy Psychology.
