Quinn OKs buses driving I-55 shoulder in congestion

August 12, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Gov. Pat Quinn signed off on a two-year pilot program that will allow commuter buses to ride on the shoulders of Interstate 55. The legislation applies to Department of Transportation and Pace buses during rush hours starting in November.

The shoulders will only be used when traffic is slower than 35 miles per hour and buses will be restricted to no more than 15 miles per hour over the top traffic speed in the mainline lanes and never more than 35 miles per hour.
