Research links obesity to deep debt

August 12, 2011

Over the last 30 years, both the number of obese Americans and the number of those in debt have skyrocketed.

Just last year, Americans had two and a half times more debt than they did three decades ago, according to the Federal Reserve Board. The CDC reports they were twice as likely to be obese than in 1980.

German researchers found a connection between food and shopping. Those who were overweight were twice as likely to be in debt.

Both food and shopping offer instant gratification, while a consumer doesn't pay consequences, at least not immediately.
