Sheriff launches online warrant search

The Cook County Sheriff's Department has posted the names of 45,000 fugitives on its website. Sheriff Tom Dart unveiled the new database Friday.

Visitors to the Sheriff's Department's website can click on a link that will allow them to search for anyone with an active warrant in Cook County.

Dart says the warrants are for crimes ranging from writing bad checks to murder.

Parents wanted for not paying child support are also on the website.

Anyone with information on a suspect's location can provide an anonymous tip.

"Frankly, it's a shrewd, financially smart thing to do, because without spending virtually any money, we have put this together - all in-house - and now we are multiplying the number of deputized people in theory," said Dart.

Dart says the information will be updated weekly.
