Numbers released Tuesday by Chicago police indicate July was the 31st month in a row that crime decreased in the city.

The statistics include both violent and property crimes.

According to the official crime statistics made public by the Chicago Police Department, there was a 2.9 percent decrease in total crime and a 7.5 percent reduction in violent crime, due largely to 19 fewer murders.

Chicago police say there was a 1.7 percent reduction in property crime.
