Author of ''Raising Confident Readers: How to Teach Your Child to Read and Write -- from Baby to Age 7,'' Richard Gentry, PhD, visited the ABC7 studio.

He talked about how parents can help their children become good readers. Here are some of his tips:

For babies - Start reading early.

For preschoolers - Introduce drawing and writing. It helps reading!

Kindergarteners - Intervene early if the child is not ready for school.

Elementary School-aged children - Make sure a spelling book is in every child's backpack Gentry says brain studies show that spelling is at the foundation of proficient reading.
