Chicago drivers 157th among metro areas

September 1, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Drivers in the Chicago metropolitan area are in the bottom quarter of 200 metro areas included in the annual Allstate Insurance safest drivers report.

The report ranks the 200 largest metropolitan areas in terms of vehicle collision frequency. Chicago is rated 157th out of 200.

However, the Chicago metro area did improve by 10 points from last year's 167th ranking.

Fort Collins, Colo., was first on the list for the second year in a row. Washington D.C. ranked last for the third year in a row.

This is Allstate's seventh annual report. Company officials say it was created to boost the country's discussion on safe driving.

As for Labor Day travel overall, AAA says fewer people are hitting the road for the holiday -- travel is down near 2.5 percent nationwide.
