Senators talk economy as Obama prepares for speech

September 6, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Senator Kirk talked about some alternative proposals on AB7 News Tuesday morning.

"I do feel the stimulus, which was supposed to fix everything, was one of the colossal economic failures in U.S. history. And now we need to think of ways to boost the economy without speeding additional taxpayer dollars, all funded by borrowed money from China. So big free trade agreements, stopping new federal regulations that cost money, and tax reform where we wipe out tax expenditures, except defending your home mortgage interest and charitable deduction," Kirk said.

"It is clear the unemployment situation is the number one concern of American people. And they really want both political parties to put their differences aside and find some common ground to move this economy forward," Durbin said.

President Obama is scheduled to announce new policy measures to spark job creation Thursday at 6 p.m. on Thursday. Watch the speech on ABC7 or ABC7Chicago.com.
