CPD clamping down on alleged sick leave abuse

September 7, 2011 (CHICAGO)

In the past two years, a special unit of the department has investigated 1,800 cases where rules may have been broken.

The Sun-Times reports that as a result the police department is trying to fire 14 officers. Another 19 face possible suspensions and 70 have received lesser forms of discipline.

"It's the small minority of officers who are abusing sick time," said CPD Superintendent Garry McCarthy. "And where that happens they're going to be disciplined."

Officers took an average of about 11 and a half sick days each in 2009. The department says figures for last year aren't yet available.
