The city of Joliet has a new police chief.

City officials announced Tuesday that Deputy Police Chief Mike Trafton will take the job. He replaces Chief Fred Hayes who retired in August.

Trafton has worked with Joliet police for more than 25 years. His different positions have included patrol officer, canine officer, crisis negotiator and operations commander. He also supervised the department's neighborhood response team and narcotic unit.

The 48-year-old has been deputy chief for the last two years.
