Panel: Energy drinks' risks outweigh benefits

The highly caffeinated drinks are classified as natural health products. But the panel says they are drug products and should be sold on drug store shelves under the supervision of a pharmacist.

The group wants them renamed "stimulant drug containing drinks" and it says labels should be on the cans warning about serious adverse effects.

The panel stresses the health risks associated with the drinks outweigh their benefits.

The beverage industry rejects the panel's research and recommendations.
