Cook Co. to donate bodies to science if burial too expensive

October 3, 2011 (CHICAGO)

The bodies of those who cannot be buried will be donated to science. If a family of a deceased person cannot afford a burial, the body will be released to the Anatomic Gift Association within two weeks.

There are some exceptions to the rule. In cases where the remains are decomposed, if the deceased had AIDS or was HIV positive or if the person weighed more than 300 pounds, the body will be buried by the county.
