Denny Smith retired from the McHenry Township Fire Department after 28 years.
He underwent surgery this summer to remove viral pneumonia from his lungs.
While smith recovered, his son, who is also a firefighter, and several of his colleagues stole a page from ABC's extreme makeover and decided to remodel the house.
Next thing they knew, they were receiving donated materials and goods from across the township.
Smith's son says it took more than three months to complete the remodel.
