1 dead, 1injured in rollover crash on 80/94

October 11, 2011 (LAKE STATION, Ind.)

Just after noon, a 2002 Chevrolet Trail Blazer was eastbound on I-80/94 in the center lane just east of Ripley Street, a release from Indiana State Police said.

A witness said the Trail Blazer went to the left, then over-corrected hard to the right. The driver apparently lost control and the SUV went off the roadway, through the guard rail and rolled four or five times. As the SUV rolled, both the driver and passenger were ejected, the release said.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lake County Coroner's office from massive blunt force trauma, the release said. The name of that person was being withheld pending family notification, police said. The other person was airlifted to a hospital in Illinois with multiple fractures and injuries.

I-80/94 eastbound was completely shut down for a time in order to accommodate a medical helicopter.
