Shea Vaughn's Ways To Defeat Stress

October 15, 2011

To help us defeat stress, we had Chicago-based trainer and wellness coach Shea Vaughn (Vince Vaughn's mom) in our ABC7 studio.

Vaughn has developed a health and fitness program for women, SheaNetics, which incorporates holistic eastern and western techniques.

On Saturday, October 15, she will present her techniques at the SCW fitness convention Midwest Mania. She will also sign copies of her new book, "Breakthrough: The 5 Living Principles to Defeat Stress, Look Great, and Find Total Well-Being."

Shea Vaughn's "5 Ways to Help Defeat Stress"

1. Breathe
Breathe deeply, and exhale slowly. This helps you relax and find internal and external balance and stability.

2. Choose your music
A song with a strong beat can stimulate brainwaves to resonate in sync with the beat. A slower beat promotes a calm, meditative state and can slow your breath and heart rate.

3. Try a full-body laugh
Lift yourself up with a chuckle. It helps you redirect your focus from what is bugging you. It is also a light form of exercise.

4. Exercise
Go for a walk, get fresh air, take in the sights, and be in the world around you.

5. Have fun
Do at least one thing you love to do.
