The average American gobbles down 24 pounds of candy a year. Much of that might happen on Halloween.

But before your children go trick-or-treating on Monday, and before you slam down all of that candy, you might want to think about this:

A better choice might be a Three Musketeers fun-size bar with 63 calories.

The worst "classic fruit candy" is Brach's Airheads. Three pieces have 140 calories. Instead you might want to eat three Dum Dum Pops.

According to the authors of "Eat This Not That," the worst miniature candy bar comes from Twix. Three pieces have 150 calories and 8 grams of fat. A better choice: Tootsie Rolls.

The worst chewy candy: Brach's Milk Maid Caramels. Eat four pieces and you'll have gobbled down about 150 calories. You would be better off with four pieces of Now and Later.

Finally, the worst seasonally themed candy: Reese's Pumpkin with 170 calories. A good substitute they say is Brach's candy corn.
