Lincoln-Way schools revise athletic safety rules

A southwest suburban school district is taking steps to protect its athletes after one was struck by a car last month during a team practice.

Cross country runners at four Lincoln-Way high schools will now mostly practice on campus instead of visiting other locations where they have to cross streets.

Patrick Mizwicki, 14, was running with his team along the trails of a forest preserve in unincorporated Palos when he was hit by a car and killed.

School officials say because of that accident, teams will stay on campus four of the five school days each week, and the other day they will be transported by bus to a site that is contained.
