FDA warns of risks from eating black licorice

Officials say people 40 and older should be careful about eating too much black licorice.

The FDA says eating more than 2 ounces of the candy every day for two weeks can cause potassium levels to dip significantly because of a sweetening compound in the candy which is derived from licorice root.

Health officials say eating too much of the candy can lead to a host of problems including irregular heartbeat and high blood pressure.
