Drugged drinks send thousands to emergency room

November 10, 2011

A new federal report finds in 2009 nearly 15,000 American men and women ended up in an emergency room after being unwittingly but intentionally drugged by someone else.

Also, about 60 percent of these cases occurred after someone surreptitiously slipped a drug into the victim's drink. Most of the victims were women but nearly 40 percent are male.

The report outlined in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration report says this isn't an epidemic but is a serious situation.

Drugs involved included stimulants, cocaine, ecstasy, and anxiety drugs.
