Chicago set to host Magnificent Mile Lights Festival

November 19, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Prep work has been going on for days. First and foremost, putting up all of those lights, which will line Michigan Avenue for the next few months. Crews have also been getting ready for Saturday evening's parade scheduled to kick off right at 5:30 p.m.

Here are some fun numbers related to the Lights Festival:

- 1 million is the number of people who will attend from all over the country.

-10,000 is the number of fireworks shells that it takes to create that spectacular grand finale display over the Chicago River.

-800 is the number of volunteers it takes to put it on the event every year.

-8 is the number of Walt Disney characters that will be in the parade, including -- of course -- Mickey and Minnie Mouse

Because of the large crowds, those heading to the festival are advised to use public transportation. In addition to North Michigan Ave., several surrounding streets will be closed not just during the parade, but also in the hours before.

Detailed information on the street closures can be found at http://magnificentmilelightsfestival.com/documents/Street_Closure_Notification_2011.pdf

Drivers in the downtown area Saturday are asked to be mindful of the closures.

(Note: Disney is the parent company of ABC7 Chicago.)
