Illinois PIRG releases toxic toy list

November 22, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Hot Wheels' Super Stunt Rat Bomb exceeds the hearing standards recommended by the National Institute of Deafness and is one of several potentially dangerous toys that the Illinois Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) displayed Tuesday at Children's Memorial Hospital.

The group says some of the toys include small parts that pose choking hazards. Others contain hazardous levels of toxic chemicals including phthalates and lead.

"You might not think an infant book would contain lead but when we took this to an EPA-certified lab we found that this vinyl green dot right here actually contains 720 parts per million of lead, 7 times higher than the safety standard set at 100 parts per million," Brian Imus, Illinois PIRG director, said.
