Friends and family were buoyed by former Chicago First Lady Maggie Daley's upbeat and energetic presence at her daughter's wedding last Thursday, but now comes word her husband has cancelled his travel plans to stay close to his ailing wife.

Former Chicago Mayor Richard Daley was scheduled to spend nearly a week as a visiting fellow at Harvard University next week. That trip, along with other speaking engagements that would have taken former Mayor Daley out of state have been scrubbed, likely through the end of the year, according to a spokesperson.

Mrs. Daley was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002. It has since spread to her bones and she has required the assistance of a wheelchair in recent months, including at her daughter's wedding last week.

Elizabeth "Lally" Daley's marriage ceremony was moved up from December 31st so her mother could fully participate.

The former Mayor has previously said his wife had a difficult summer, suffering a series of health-related setbacks.
