Medicare to allow access to claims database

December 5, 2011

The government has announced that Medicare will finally allow its claims database to be used by employers, insurance companies and consumer groups. That means report cards on local doctors and hospitals can now be produced. Experts can find out things such as how often a doctor has performed a particular procedure.

The data can also provide a general sense of problems such as preventable complications. Consumers could start seeing these performances reports sometime later next year.
