Adoptees seeking original birth records

Illinois officials say they've received more than 4,000 applications from adoptees seeking copies of their original birth certificates since a new law went into effect.

State Rep Sara Feigenholtz, an adoptee, sponsored the new law. Last month she held an event to help adoptees fill out the paperwork.

Generally, original birth certificates are sealed and new ones are issued when adoptions are final. But the 2010 Illinois Adoption Act has allowed adoptees to request non-certified copies of their original birth certificates.
