Tuesday morning, his son, former Mayor Richard M. Daley, attended a special Mass to remember his father at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church in the Bridgeport community.
Many other members of the Daley family also attended.
The Mass was the first time Daley had been seen in public in Chicago since the death of his wife Maggie. He reportedly had been vacationing with close friends.
Richard J. Daley died in his doctor's Michigan Avenue office December 20,1976. He had been mayor for 21 years.
Only his son served longer as Chicago's mayor.
