U.S. Senator Dick Durbin met Wednesday with representatives from the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

They discussed the growing need for food assistance programs.

In Cook County, demand for emergency food assistance has soared by 36 percent over the past five years.

"I think this time of year in this economy, we've got to be sensitive to the fact that more people need a helping hand, even a lot of them who are working are struggling to make ends meet and keep their families fed," said Durbin.

People can help by donating food like canned goods when they see a food collection barrel.
