Shoppers push, shove outside Indy malls for shoes

December 23, 2011 (INDIANAPOLIS)

Indianapolis metro police spokesman Officer Kendale Adams tells The Indianapolis Star shoppers tore a door off its hinges at Lafayette Square. Shopper Asia Coates says people squeezed in past the broken door.

WRTV-TV says about 1,500 people showed up at Castleton Square Mall where two shops had only 300 pairs of the shows between them. Mall security called police for backup after pushing and shoving broke out.

Police Sgt. Mitchell Waters says officers did what they could to make sure successful shoppers were able to leave the mall safely after buying their shoes.

Police report no injuries or arrests.
