2 teens killed, 3 hurt in I-57 crash near Homewood

January 1, 2012 (HOMEWOOD, Ill.)

The accident happened just before 5 a.m. at 183rd Street near south suburban Homewood and Country Club Hills.

The Mazda SUV carrying the five teenagers was traveling at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway and rolled over, an Illinois state trooper said.

It had been reported stolen before the crash occured.

Among those killed in the accident were the driver and one of the passengers.

According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office Avocean Lewis, 17, of Country Club Hills was pronounced dead at 5:49 a.m. at St. James Hospital and Health Centers in Olympia Fields and 16-year-old Tyon Groves, of Matteson, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Three other passengers were transported to area hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Illinois State Police continued to investigate the crash Sunday. It was not determined immediately if alcohol was a factor, the trooper said.
