US Education secretary to speak at NCAA convention

January 24, 2012 10:00:00 PM PST
U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan is expected to tell university leaders that they need to find a better balance between athletics and academics.

Duncan was scheduled to speak during the NCAA convention's keynote luncheon Wednesday in Indianapolis.

NCAA President Mark Emmert says he and Duncan speak on a regular basis. Emmert also has sought advice from the education department about advising schools on how to deal with sex-abuse accusations, such as those that have been alleged at Penn State and Syracuse.

Duncan also was expected to ask universities to work with leaders at the conference level and inside the NCAA to support a series of changes backed by Emmett including simplifying NCAA rules, more targeted enforcement, and a speedier enforcement process.
