More than 80 dogs seized from Chesterton home

January 12, 2012 (CHESTERTON, Ind.)

Porter County Animal Control took the dogs the from home near Chesterton Wednesday and Thursday morning.

Donna Montoya, who owned the animals, has been charged with animal neglect before. But the charges were later dropped. She now faces several counts of cruelty to animals.

Officials say the woman was not running a dog mill, but the animals kept having puppies.

"She just got overwhelmed. She realized she just couldn't handle anymore and didn't know what to do," said Porter County Sheriff's Sergeant Larry LaFlower.

Three responders were bitten by the animals. Two required stitches. They all will receive antibiotics and rabies shots as a precaution.
