Lawsuit filed for high-rise fire death

January 18, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Shantel McCoy was killed when she took an elevator up to the 12th floor of her apartment building in the 3100-block of North Lake Shore Drive earlier this month.

McCoy was unaware of a fire that had broken out on that floor.

She was killed when the elevator doors opened.

McCoy's mother has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the building's management claiming they failed to properly warn residents of the fire.

The 21-story building did not have sprinklers or a hard-wire alarm system.

Building management has not commented on the lawsuit.
