Study: Antibiotics don't help treat sinus infections

February 14, 2012

But a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association finds the medication does not appear to help much when it comes to sinusitis.

Here's what researchers are telling the journal:

"We had expected that the use of antibiotic would get patients feeling better quicker, and that's just not what we found," said Dr. Jay F. Piccirillo, Washington University School of Medicine. "At day three, the patients with antibiotics had no better resolution of their symptoms than the patients who didn't have antibiotics."

Researchers say the study provides further evidence for what doctors have suspected for a long time, and that is antibiotics do not help sinus patients get better quicker.
