High-fructose corn syrup getting a bad rap?

February 22, 2012

A new study in Canada shows that high-fructose corn syrup sweeteners should not get all the blame for weight gain. Researchers at McMaster University in Ontario are drawing that conclusion based on the analysis of 41 different studies.

High-fructose corn syrup sweeteners are used in many soft drinks.

Researchers say, in order to avoid weight gain, people should pay attention to total calories. They admit some of the studies they analyzed had shortcomings, so they want to do more research in this area.

The study appears in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
