In this study in the journal Genome Medicine, researchers found eyes with age-related AMD were especially likely to have an over-expression of 20 of these genes.
They add these genes can identify people with AMD, distinguish between different types and in some cases may be able to detect it earlier.
Researchers say better understanding of AMD's genetic basis may help in the search for treatments that are currently very limited.
