Johnson was born and raised in Chicago. He has created several pieces that shares the African American experience and tells stories of that community's history. In 2001, Johnson was awarded the Chicago Urban League's Empowerment Entrepreneur Sprit Award. His work has been selected for exhibition at several Chicago galleries and shows.
Johnson is a member of the Chicago Alliance of African American Photographers, and helped create "The Journey Project", which documents African American life and experiences in the City of Chicago. As part of the project, his work was accepted into the Chicago Historical Society permanent collection in 2005.
