Legislation may increase motor fuel tax

February 29, 2012 (CHICAGO)

A group called the Active Transportation Alliance wants legislation in Springfield that would tie the tax to inflation.

The extra tax would only apply in the Chicago area.

The alliance estimates it would amount to a fraction of a penny per year and would cost the average family about $25 a year.

It would generate $168 million over five years but it would have to get through the legislature first.

The legislation has a sponsor in the senate but not in the house.
