313 whooping cases confirmed in McHenry County

Three hundred and thirteen cases of whooping cough have been confirmed in McHenry County since an outbreak began last august.

Health officials say 156 cases involved children aged 10 and younger.

A pair of 2-month-old infants were hospitalized but have recovered.

Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory illness. Patients experience cold-like symptoms before developing a cough with a whooping sound.
