Study links wine with reduced risk of stroke in women

March 9, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Researchers looked at data on nearly 84,000 women. Those who drank low amounts of alcohol -- about one half to a glass of wine per day -- were up to 21 percent less likely to have a stroke. That's compared to women who drank no alcohol.

Researchers speculate that alcohol may contain components that prevent blood clots and cholesterol buildup in the arteries. Both are risk factors for stroke. However, large amounts of alcohol may have the opposite effect.

There's more on this in the journal Stroke.
