A man found the bones while walking in the woods near Chase Street between 36th and 37th streets. He called police, who secured the area.
Police said the bones appear to belong to a child but they can say little else about the discovery right now.
"We have no idea what we're dealing with until we get (a) forensic individual from Indianapolis here to go through (the) scene," said Gary police Cmdr. Michael Jackson. "One or more bodies, we have no idea."
This is the second discovery of bones in the area this month. Last Friday, a skull was found just a few miles away at 27th and Maryland.
